Senior Project Engineer - Highway Construction
A leading heavy civil construction contractor is seeking an experienced Senior Project Engineer to support major state and federally funded highway infrastructure projects in the Greater Roanoke area, with a particular focus on large-scale Interstate construction work.
This is an excellent opportunity for a construction professional with strong highway project experience to play a key role in the planning, coordination, and successful delivery of complex milling and paving operations. The successful candidate will work closely with owners, prime contractors, field teams, inspectors, and quality control personnel to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee short-term and long-term project schedules in alignment with construction phasing plans.
- Coordinate personnel, equipment, and resources across multiple internal departments to support daily operations.
- Develop and communicate shift plans, production goals, and project priorities to field teams and stakeholders.
- Identify potential safety, operational, and constructability issues and proactively implement solutions.
- Monitor daily production activities, document quantities completed, work locations, and jobsite events, and distribute detailed reports to project stakeholders.
- Collaborate with inspectors and quality control teams to ensure compliance with all project specifications and standards.
- Coordinate construction activities to maximise productivity while maintaining a safe environment for employees and the travelling public.
- Maintain regular communication with owners, contractors, and project partners to ensure milestones and project objectives are achieved.
- Track project costs and production performance to support budget adherence and project profitability.
- Resolve field challenges and unforeseen project issues in a professional and timely manner.
- Support milling and paving operations through effective planning, coordination, and execution.
- Work flexible schedules, including night shifts when required by project demands and transportation authority requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to read, interpret, and understand highway construction plans and specifications.
- Strong knowledge of construction surveying and grade control.
- Proven experience managing construction crews and coordinating field operations.
- Excellent organisational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities with the capacity to work effectively with internal teams, clients, contractors, and regulatory stakeholders.
- Valid driver's licence with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Civil Engineering degree or other construction-related qualification preferred.
- Relevant industry experience may be considered in place of formal education.
- Experience with asphalt milling and paving operations.
- Experience working on Department of Transportation (DOT) highway construction projects.
- Familiarity with both Design-Build and Bid-Build delivery methods.
- Minimum of 5 years of highway construction experience on large infrastructure projects.
